Paul Metivier

I often begin my work with a crude outline of the human head, and allow it to develop intuitively. I invite change in response to the unsettling qualities of the clay where pretext develops as I realize a silhouette and allow it to become its own. The details come from memory: an inventory of features I have seen in others- features that make up the physiognomy of each portrait. Finally, I rely on the surface to conclude each piece. The viscerally carved clay diverts the origins of the material giving each piece its own tale of creation and demise.

I think of objects of having a life outside their intended use and that their patina serves as evidence of that journey.
