Bio
I am interested in the intentional and unintentional relationships between painting, drawing, and print. I have found a way to create actual dimension in my paintings by carving into the surface, and revealing the previously buried details by working reductively. I use objects as a vehicle to transfer color and texture onto a surface. I am drawn to round. Washers, rubber bands, bubble wrap, and sink drains are among my favorites objects. This process, in turn, provides alliteration in terms of texture, shape and color.
My paintings start with a simple composition. I paint, sand, draw, print, carve, glaze, and repeat. Each layer is a surface for experimentation, and a finished painting with a history to be revealed, still a simple composition. The balance may shift during the working process and I have new elements to discover. I work quickly and on several pieces at once so I focus on the layer I am on and not the finished piece. Creating the many layers gives me a stronger connection to each piece.
