Danila Rumold    Bio

"My subjects are trees, architecture and the human body. Connection to these forms is created through interpersonal reflection. I use these motifs as a vehicle for entering the drawing and painting process.

The main element for the work’s structure and subjectivity is color. My color choices are based on and evoke a sense of places I have lived and traveled to. Whether it is the neutral tones of Seattle, or the warm earth tones of Italy, nature provides color reference, while memory saturates them.

Equally important for the work’s configuration is the lyrical movement of line. Searching for the structure of line against atmospheric space demands a constant negotiation between drawing and painting. In doing so, figure and ground meet and disintegrate. My images hover between form and formlessness, representation and abstraction.

The media of my work are drawing, painting and printmaking. Using traditional materials such as ink, watercolor, gouache, and oil paint, I work with them in non-conventional ways. My practice begins from observation. Returning to the work itself, my activity continues by layering paint over areas, by scraping, scratching and sanding. By emphasizing the physicality of my materials, a dense texture builds up adding to the active play between surface, space and depth.

Through meditation on form and mediation of material, content is disclosed through the archi-textural structures which express human emotions, intimacy, and spirituality. Through my process, I arrive at another form of seeing."
