Emanuel Ranny    Bio

Even in his early landscapes, a fragile charm reminiscent of calligraphy is apparent in Emanuel Ranny's work. Groups of lines record both the artist's individual experience and the collective wisdom of past generations. They are complemented by the sensitive strokes of the artist's tool and by the structures that gradually recede into surfaces that are balanced by negative spaces. Ranny's work feels like a landscape.

Ranny's pieces evoke a sense of metamorphosis, motion, the sprouting growth of vegetation, and the scent of soil blowing in the wind. They have a completely original structure involving clean-cut patterns and a harmonious interplay of contrasting elements: motion and stillness, line and surface, vigor and tenderness.

Mr. Ranny's work, which bears little resemblance to any other Czech artist, has been described as lyrical, meditative, and even fragile. He made his U.S. debut in 1996, and is displayed in Oregon's Portland Art Museum, the National Gallery in Prague, and the Bavarian National Library in Munich. His work is also shown in the Institute for Art and Culture in Catania, Italy, and the Prefectural Gallery in Kanagawa, Japan.
