Paul
Metivier Bio
I often begin my work with a principle idea: of a body or a
head, but allow it to become its own, and permit the head or
body to develop its own persona by continuing to invite change
to take place as part of the building process. The content of
each piece is never carved in stone. I rely on the unreliability
of memory, and intuition to develop these forms. After I have
finished building, surfacing and firing a piece, it comes back
into the studio where I begin to react to what it is I have
built with paint, stain and just about anything else that can
make a mark. I finish the work with a title, often a name that
comes from who or what I recognize in each piece.
