Koren Christofides Bio
Old Stories, Reverberating Voices—I return to this title from a previous exhibition (1992) as ancient cultures, primordial landscapes, mythology and old tales continue to inform my work. There in I find the origin of thoughts and ideas that still persist and rich imaginations that challenge our own. Over time the use of myth has led to fables (la Fontaine), his contes (the erotic tales), to proverbs about women, to humor and irony. A parallel investigation is the (constant) drolerie of the fashion world. Continuing in the spirit of 'fun', could there be a better source of inspiration with which to clothe the figures in ensuing narratives?
As for my ceramic work, the Proverb Soupbowls are inspired by sake cups in Chinese restaurants in France, where, for both sexes, each sip reveals a naked version of their opposite. A ‘silly’ conclusion to a meal. Still, this object sparked a way to turn the implicit misogyny found in proverbs about women on its head. To enhance the sense of irony I delight in beginning an outrageous sounding notion on the exterior of the form and then imagine supping down to the last spoonful to reveal the ‘punch line’ inside.
