An object's surface can become a landscape layered in shifting deposits of both man and nature. The marks, found on almost every structure where people live, build a rich skin on the surfaces of everyday items. I have been drawn to these marks for several years, incorporating many of their characteristics into my work; using symbols and imagery to express my experiences, finding patterns created by the abstraction of layering, and the elemental impact of nature upon a mark. While I'm continually inspired by the surfaces I find on our urban infrastructure, I believe it is the urge behind these marks that truly drives my work. The desire to create a symbol to convey an idea and the drive to overlay these marks again and again; a surface becomes not only the page to express my most recent thought but also a catalog of all the ideas that came before. It is through this massing of marks; the laying down and fracturing of ideas, and the decomposition and reinvention over time, that I impart a history to a surface.

My work explores the uncertainty of a surface and its state of transition as an object progresses through time. My pieces search for an intersection where diverse elements meet, the quiet interaction of images that are natural/organic and those that are deliberate/symbolic. These elements, and my continual drive to interact with our contemporary visual landscape, represent the underlying focus of my work. My objective is to explore the boundaries of the painted surface while engaging the environment that surrounds me.
