Max Benjamin Bio
Max Benjamin was born in 1928 in San Diego, California. Max Benjamin moved to the Northwest in the early 1950’s where he attended the University of Washington and studied with the renowned Walter F. Isaacs. In 1959 he moved to Guemes Island to devote his full energy to art. During the 1960's and early 70's he looked to the land, sea, sky, and atmosphere as sources of inspiration. In the mid 70's however he began to explore new elements-eccentric shapes and forms, colors that were not local, and other purely formal issues.Max Benjamin has exhibited his paintings throughout the United States, Europe, and Canada and can be found in many public and private collections. In 1998 Governor Gary Locke and the Washington State Arts Commission bestowed Max with the Governor's Arts Award recognizing Max Benjamin as one of the state's leading fine art influences who has brought international attention to Washington State through his art.
